What is forum etiquette?

Forums were generally pushed to the wayside by the time I really got into using the Internet. What is proper forum etiquette and usage?

Post about interesting stuff? Respond thoughtfully to the posts of others. It’s less ephemeral than slack/twitter/facebook, so realize that you are posting for the ages.

Don’t call people names unless it’s funny and understood to be humorous.

Imagine that you have a group of friends (I know we’re internet friends, which is different, but still): you want your group to do great things. Like the Academy of Plato or the Lycaeum of Aristotle. Maybe some Parisian salon. St. Charles Borromeo used to gather his friends for dinner and present learned papers to each other. C.S. Lewis and Tolkien took part in the Inklings. That’s what I’m after.

Tell us about whatever interests you. Do it with the attention and care that shows you really do love your subject. Try to get us to love it too.

How’s that for a start?
