Training Log and Music Hall

In my defense, I’m much skinnier than I used to be at max strength.

  • Music: Jpop, mostley Milet and Hitsujingabuku
  • BW 193

  • Squat 270x5x3
  • Press 145x4x4
  • skipped the dips. We had company.

Didn’t lift today, but I did listen to more Mozart. I’m working through his works in order. Currently up to KV 124. I think he’s 15. It’s all good, but mostly just good, not brilliant yet, except for the sacred works. Those are real nice.

Try this one. Litaniae de venerabili altaris sacramento KV 125 | IDAGIO

He’s 16, working for the cathedral of Salzburg.

Karl,

How do you distinguish between a Mozart piece that is good, very good or brilliant?

Mostly what I’m looking for is the development of the themes. I want them turned around and extended in interesting ways, unpredictable before you hear them, but that make perfect sense. Or, I want it so beautiful I have to stop what I’m doing lest I weep for the emotion.

Take KV 545: See how the opening theme is turned upside down in the allegro? That’s neat. I don’t know how to define neat.

Or when it goes to minor in the middle of the first movement, and it’s still recognizable the same sonata, but you’re in foreign lands, until you come back to the beginning. I experience such creativity with delight. I don’t really know how to describe it. I’m listening to this piece right now, and I just can’t wait to see where he’s going to take me next.

In the juvenile stuff which I would consider good, not great or brilliant, I don’t have the same excitement. It’s very good Viennese music, it follows all the rules, it’s well done, but it’s not surprising.

Take this aria, of the young man who’s seen an image of the daughter of the Queen of the Night, and he’s just stunned. I count this as the “beautiful” in my calculations.

Anyway, as my daughter once said to me, “Beauty is objective but undefinable.”

I’m going to listen with your “ear” as you described it. Thanks!!

Bodyweight is down to 190, where I intend to stay. I’ll have to eat more food soon, but I honestly don’t know how I will do it. If you resolve to eat unprocessed food, it’s very difficult to get an excess of calories.

Music: babymetal, Masayuki Suzuki, the coolest man in Japan.
