Podcast on Aquinas on whether humans can see God.

  • If there is a God, an uncreated creator, there’s a problem–how can we ever talk of such a being, since all of our language and thought comes through the senses?

Blog on whether we need guides, “ranchers” of our souls.

  • Spoiler: yeah, probably.

New blog post about why forums were neat. You probably don’t need to read it if you are already signed up here!

Have You Done Your Christmas Shopping?

It’s the Christmas season! If you’re looking for something to fill your virtual stocking, let me remind you of what we have here on the shelves at Soulsteading.life.

  1. One on one mentorships. $100 for an hour of directed conversation with me via Zoom. We can talk about whatever you want, but typically we will talk about books. Most recently I discussed the theology of St. Gregory Palamas and the essence/energy distinction in God with one of our fellow members. He proposed the book, I took a week or so to study, and then we had a fruitful conversation. It’s like college, only a la carte.
  2. Same about #1 but in a bundle of five, so that each session is $75. I’ve got a few of these running and we’re talking about Republic in one and just went through a bunch of Sophocles’ plays in the other. Again, you and I set the topic and then we schedule the meetings.
  3. The Socrates Club: Using the Barbell Logic Turnkey Coach app, you and I work through a course of studies asynchronously. I propose reading prompts for you, and you respond. This can be through text or recorded video, as you like. You get “workouts” which are reading assignments. When you finish them, I receive notice and then respond to your thoughts.

The goal is the same as that of Socrates: to help you give birth to wisdom in yourself. It’s about you, not about me. Socrates was a midwife, so he says, helping his interlocutors bring to light that which is within them. I aspire to the same thing for you!

There are also options to support the podcast and blog over here at Stripe, should you be so moved. I appreciate every little bit! I go through considerable amounts of coffee, both regular and decaf, and a few bucks here or there is a big help.

Don’t forget about the new Discourse forum that I’m hosting. We’ve got a bunch of good folks there, and we’re building up a community of friends. I post ephemera there which isn’t appropriate for a blog. You can follow my training log, music recommendations, tech tips, the popular What I’m Reading topic, and post your own contributions. Recently people have been sharing recipes and shop projects.

I hope you and yours all have a blessed Christmas season. Remember to leave your tree up at least until Epiphany! The Christmas season doesn’t start until Dec 25 and runs at least until Twelfth Night. You should probably let it stay up until February 2. Be a Christmas maximalist!

I’ve been waiting to write this one up. A tale of weight loss and how this last time was by far the easiest. Maybe it will help you?

I’m going to crosspost the blog at substack as well. Trying to get a bit more organic reach. . . Maybe you might want to subscribe?

I like the last bit I wrote about Machiavelli, up at

and

question: do you guys like substack better for blog reading? I like the platform but I also like owning my own stuff. I’ll probably just post everything twice.

I prefer reading on your site, I have a few sub stacks I bounce over to on occasion but I have your blog bookmarked.

I thought this post was very interesting. My attempts at dieting are usually derailed by hunger or cravings. If I wanted to learn more which book or source would you recommend I start with?

Try Casey Means Good Energy

New blog up at soulsteading.life/blog and on the soulsteading.substack.com, a reflection on Heroic Virtue and if we need it now. TL;DR: probably.

I’m sorry that I’m late on the podcast! I’ll try to get it done tomorrow. Some life stuff happening, alas.

This one is on optimization. I’ve pretty much figured out the best way to do everything, and, like Buddha or Zoroaster, I’m descending from the mountain to share it with you.

The ordo amoris has been in the news. Read on for St. Thomas Aquinas’ take:

I’ve been busy. Lots of podcasts, an audio reading of Chesterton’s book on Aquinas, and a bunch of blog posts.

I, and probably nobody else, likes my little article on optimizing your life with tiling window managers.
